Claire Pomeroy, MD, MBA, is President and CEO of the Albert and Mary Lasker Foundation, where she is responsible for advancing the Foundation’s mission to improve health by accelerating support for medical research through recognition of research excellence, advocacy and education. 

An infectious disease expert, Pomeroy is a long-time advocate for patients, especially the underserved and those with HIV/AIDS. She is also passionate about strengthening public health infrastructure, nationally and around the globe. She has a special interest in health care policy, with a focus on the importance of the social determinants of health. She has published more than 100 articles and edited three books.

Pomeroy was Chief of Infectious Diseases at the University of Kentucky. She then joined UC Davis in 2003 as Executive Associate Dean and served as Vice Chancellor and Dean of the School of Medicine from 2005 through 2013, until she became President of the Lasker Foundation.

Pomeroy serves as a member of Cure’s Leadership Committee for the 2024 XSeed Award, which provides New York City minority- and women-led life science and healthcare startups critical funding to translate scientific discoveries into commercially successful drug therapies. She has a deep commitment to working with new scientists and helping shape the trajectories of young careers.

“The XSeed Award program aligns perfectly with the Lasker Foundation's mission,” Pomeroy said. “It’s crucial that we promote the life science research ecosystem in New York City and be a catalyst for advancing diversity, innovation and excellence.”

Pomeroy also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Morehouse School of Medicine and the Board of Directors for the Science Philanthropy Alliance, the iBiology/Science Communication Lab, the Center for Women in Academic Medicine and Science, Sierra Health Foundation, Embecta and Haemonetics. She was inducted into the National Academy of Medicine in 2011. Among her many honors, she has received honorary degrees from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and the University of South Florida Morsani School of Medicine.

Pomeroy received her bachelor and medical degrees from the University of Michigan and completed her residency and fellowship training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the University of Minnesota. She earned an MBA from the University of Kentucky and is a proud member of the Gatton Business School’s Hall of Fame. 

She splits her between New York City and the South Carolina shore, along with her husband and rescue dog, Ellie. Pomeroy is a serious gardener, and enjoys reading and exercise.
