Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD, DPhil

Siddhartha Mukherjee, MD, DPhil, is Associate Professor of Medicine at Columbia University. Born in New Delhi, Mukherjee earned his BS at Stanford University, his DPhil at Oxford University where he was a Rhodes Scholar, and his MD at Harvard Medical School. He specializes in hematology and oncology, with a focus on the development of immunotherapies.

Mukherjee also is a renowned science writer. His 2010 book, The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, detailed the evolution of diagnosis and treatment of human cancers, and won the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction. The book also was the basis for a three-part documentary directed by Barak Goodman and executive produced by Ken Burns, which aired on PBS. His 2016 book, The Gene: An Intimate History, was also adapted for PBS. His latest book, The Song of the Cell, won the 2023 PROSE Award for Excellence in Biological and Life Sciences and the 2023 Chautauqua Prize. He has also written for The New Yorker, The Guardian and other outlets.
