William Pao, MD, PhD, is a physician-scientist whose career has spanned academia, industry and biotech. As a faculty member at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and Vanderbilt University, he was a practicing oncologist recognized for his ground-breaking work in translational medicine, mechanistic and clinical studies of targeted cancer therapeutics, and cancer genomics and personalized medicine, changing the standard of care in lung cancer. 

In industry, through executive leadership positions at Roche in Basel, Switzerland, and Pfizer in New York, he oversaw the discovery and development of a portfolio of new molecular entities, many of which received regulatory approval for indications in cancer, rare diseases, ophthalmology, infectious diseases (including vaccines), neuroscience, rare blood disorders, and immunology. Pao is currently CEO and Co-Founder of a cancer biotechnology company.

Pao received his undergraduate degree from Harvard, and his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Yale University. The author of multiple scientiﬁc and medical publications, he has advised numerous professional associations and has served on the editorial boards of peer-reviewed medical research journals. Pao also co-founded MyCancerGenome, an internationally recognized online tool to enable a genetically informed approach to cancer medicine.

Pao is author of the book, *Breakthrough: The Quest for Life-Changing Medicines*, published in the UK October 2024, and in the U.S. January 2025.
